Military Devotional – Preparation – Week 3 or 8

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:1-2

Imagine how your walk with Christ can have an impact on others. For some, this impact may be miniscule in nature, about the size of a mustard seed. Do you remember when you were coming up through the ranks, how you assessed each leader upon first having met them, gauging if they were “worth their salt” and determining how much you’d trust them in battle? Or perhaps you’re just starting out on your military journey faced with the culture shock of having left home for the first time and now are inundated with a new culture, a new language of acronyms and a new way of learning how to work well and perform individually and in a unit. Wherever you are in your military career, know that the Lord calls you to be steadfast in your followership of Him.

As you cohabitate with, train with, fight with, workout with, relax with, and build the bonds of camaraderie and friendship with others, you should realize that not everybody follows the same belief system that you do. If you come from a small town, this may be a new feeling for you. The world will try to sway your understanding of the truth. Those that do not share your same sentiments are easily manipulated by the enemy where value is found in materialistic objects. However, Ecclesiastes reminds us that followership of the world, is akin to chasing after the wind. It’s meaningless.

The armor that we wear is not just physical. While we’re prepared for the military fight with an assortment of technology and equipment, the spiritual battle is just as real and we need to stay sharpened every day, as the world is the enemy’s playground and he works to steal, kill, and destroy your hope, your joy, and your salvation.

As you go about your day do not let the pressures of this world cause you to stray from what you know and believe to be true. While your brothers and sisters allow the stigma and stereotype of the military to come to fruition in their lives, you are challenged to transform your mind, and to love on and share your joy with those around you.

Dear heavenly father we come to you today with a sincere heart seeking to be transformed by the renewal of our minds. We know that following you in a diverse military environment may not always be easy but we pray that you cover us with your blood so that we can seek peace and refuge in your word and in your arms. Lord we stand on your promises and believe your word to be true. Help us to share the good news and be the light for others that may only know darkness. Let the mustard seeds flourish Oh Lord so that others may taste of your goodness. In Jesus name we pray, Amen!
